TMS Therapy

Antidepressants not working? TMS can help.

In our attempt to be one of the leading psychiatry practices in the nation, we now offer Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a new medication-free treatment for depression.

This is great news if your antidepressants are ineffective or causing side effects. It’s also helpful if you are a person who dislikes taking tablets. In the elderly, where we often see more side-effects from anti-depressants, it’s super-safe.

What is TMS?

It’s a new depression treatment that uses a magnetic coil about the size of a large mobile phone that rests on the left side of the head. The magnetic coil is focused exactly over the small area of the brain that is impaired in depression. Magnetic pulses of a specific frequency stimulate nerve cells, which ultimately improves depression symptoms.

Is It Sedating?

No. The patient sits in a comfortable chair and remains awake throughout.

How Does TMS Compare to Medications?

Compared to antidepressants, TMS typically has almost no side effects. The most common side effect is mild scalp discomfort or headache during treatment. If this happens, usually, a Tylenol is all that is required.

What is the Response Rate?

Response and remission rates depend on factors such as the severity of the depression and the number of prior treatments. As a rough guide, about 70% of patients can expect an improvement and 30-50% a complete recovery.

How Long is the Treatment?

TMS takes about 30 minutes, 5 days a week for 6 weeks. You can schedule it before work or in your lunch hour. If treatment conflicts with your work, we are happy to write a medical note to your employer.

Cautions

TMS is not recommended for individuals with a history of seizures because it can rarely induce one.

Because of the magnetic force, people with metal implants in or around the head can’t be treated. Hip, knee and shoulder joint replacements are safe.

Does Insurance Pay for TMS?

Yes, TMS is covered by most insurances although coverage varies depending on your plan.

Are All TMS Devices the Same?

No, not all TMS devices are the same. Our machine is the Apollo, manufactured in Germany under the strictest standards, and one of the newest devices available. It’s FDA approved. Over two million Apollo TMS treatments have been delivered.
